La bière - c'est moi!

Sonnenkönig V. is a Russian Imperial Stout, that impresses with its disctinctive roasted flavours as well as fine woody and sour cherry aromas.
As in every year, our creative master brewer has organized very special wooden barrels for the barrel aging of this beer: The Sonnenkönig V. was left to mature for months in ash barrels, which had previously been filled with kirsch from the renowned Black Forest distillery Schladerer.
The result is something to be proud of - and a very special treat for every beer connoisseur.

Sonnenkönig V. - Barrel Aged Russian Imperial Stout

The 2018 edition of the Stiegl vintage beers is a barrel aged Russian Imperial Stout.

Our head brewer describes our Sonnenkönig V. as follows:
"A mighty Russian Imperial Stout is the foundation of the “Sonnenkönig V.” which has been stored in a cherry brandy ash wood barrel for several months. Black as night, the prominent beer impresses with a distinctive roast flavour which, however, still allows for the expression of some sour cherry and wood flavours as well. It is not an accident that the taste reminds of a ripe Burgundy wine, as nose and palate experience a whole array of flavours, including dark stone fruit, coffee and, last not least, a delicate touch of balsamic vinegar. In union with the alcoholic body, these flavours sway in a long last dance of a majestic ball night."

The Stiegl-Experience

“Beer is a truly divine medicine.” (Paracelsus)

Beer has been enjoyed hundreds of years ago. But did you know that beer has been one of the few "safe" foods for a long time?

Up to the early Modern Period, clean drinking water was the exception rather than the rule. Very often epidemics were caused by polluted water. Since beer is boiled during the brewing process, bacteria from the water are killed. In addition to that, beer contains hops and alcohol. Both of which have germ-inhibiting properties. Thus, beer was a safe drink in early times. It is also very nutritious and contains a number of vitamins and minerals. So it was not only Saint Hildegard of Bingen but also Salzburg's doctor and mystic Paracelsus, who underlined the high value of beer.
Up until today, our brew masters take good care of this fact, so your Stiegl beer is a truly divine drink.

In addition to brewing the classic Stiegl range, our master brewers also have the opportunity to live out their creative veins and produce modern and unusual beer styles - often referred to as "craft beer". Besides Columbus 1492 Pale Ale, the result are the annual, limited-edition "Sonnenkönig" beers, as well as the regularly changing Stiegl Craft Beers.
